Topography Cambridgeshire / William Sargeant, [ca. 1810].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of data and topographical descriptions of each of the parishes of Cambridgeshire as well as for each of the colleges of Cambridge University. The volume begins with lists of presentations to livings in Cambridgeshire, as well as members of Parliament from Cambridgeshire, sheriffs, and members of the university. This is followed by an entry on the diocese of Ely, in which the author provides a chronological account of the improvements to Ely Cathedral, notes St. John's Hospital, and lists the names and dates of the principal members of the convent and cathedral church at Ely, including abbesses, abbots, bishops, and archdeacons, from 673 AD to the present, which he declares he has taken, with improvements, from James Bentham's history of Ely. For each parish within the diocese, the volume includes what its author deems remarkable information, such as famous persons, topological features, and founders. The author also includes the dates of rectors and vicars in each parish, and occasionally includes epitaphs, church inscriptions, and lists of burials. The volume also contains summaries of each college of Cambridge University, including information about their founding history, elected masters, administrative and scholarly members, and notable architecture. The manuscript also contains lists of professors arranged by field of study and a history of the university at large.
